One of the communication options for teams that is experiencing significant growth is \u201cchat.\u201d You have probably heard software teams raving about HipChat (now part of Slack) or Slack and said to yourself, \u201cWhat is the big deal? How is this better than Skype?\u201d The significant growth area seems to be in and around the area of \u201cChatOps\u201d and how folks are leveraging these tools and others to accomplish ChatOps.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what is ChatOps? According to Atlassian (the maker of Slack):<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-left: 110px; margin-right: 100px\"><i>ChatOps is a collaboration model that connects people, tools,                  process, and automation into a transparent workflow.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To me, ChatOps is leveraging \u201cbots\u201d to do repetitive tasks while at the same time sharing with a&nbsp; group or team.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking a step back, most of us have been using an integrated source control, ticket management, sprint management and wiki type service for managing software construction for many years. The most popular tool is <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/software\/jira\" target=\"blank\">Jira<\/a>, but we also use <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/unfuddle.com\/\" target=\"blank\">Unfuddle<\/a> and <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/introducing-azure-devops\/\" target=\"blank\">Team Foundation Server <\/a>(TFS) for our projects. The beauty of these tools is that you can manage, link and integrate all the work products that are part of software construction together easily and effectively. For example, Katie can create a ticket for a change to our timesheet system, she can describe the change she wants, attach files (Figure A), and then converse with and provide feedback to the developer, Olga (Figure C). Olga can associate her code changes to this ticket (Figure B).<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See Figures A, B, and C below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/nuqv7tKo3g0OovWWAEkBw217GYOFa2apVvY6TjKRbkRq-FhVJ82jpqPMGMATzzUUlkkZbPRgwjnTodrac_WCqHNFzqzhD17tOz2qLaQ9undmePqFsiSbeXa3pMf6QRSROcRCjPbT\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, while looking at any code in the system, I can figure out why the code is there and who created or modified it. So if I was looking at the timesheets_helper.rb file and wanted to know why this date code was here, I can see that Olga made the change on June 11th. I can click on the change and it will take me back to the ticket that Katie requested and know the business owner who wanted the change (see Figure D below).<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Figure D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/cIbVWOZ3ABOVJqeO6FVhhfFI_RghocZkD4cZ29YkP3HJ_qb7TVNHRgzATZb3g12sLrwwIYY-Oz_vRmTcbh0IPNHX8OWMmLIAKsTiZAqX1harbLWNVtQKHtuqZYSXfnH8DXyWboq4\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of these tools have shortcuts that allow these associations. Unfuddle uses \u201cpowerful commits\u201d where I can relate a ticket to a commit by using the \u201c#\u201d sign and the ticket number and a description. I can also change the ticket status by using a keyword. When I do a commit to Git this way, it automatically associates the change with the ticket and updates the status. So if Olga puts \u201c#111 RESOLVED change end date to be current period,\u201d this change would be associated with ticket 111 and the ticket marked resolved.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"padding: 12px; background-color: #eee9e9; line-height: 1.2; margin: 40px; border: 1px solid #ccc; border-radius: 6px; box-shadow: 1px #ccc; border-left: 5px solid #61963D;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large; color: #61963d;\">\u201c<\/span><em>&#8230;[C]hatOps can be used as the next level of automation for software construction.<\/em><span style=\"font-size: x-large; color: #61963d; line-height: 1.0;\">\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now what does this have to do with ChatOps? First, ChatOps can be used as the next level of automation for software construction. I could use ChatOps to automatically notify the other developers on my team (via a chat group and some automation) of important events. In the example above, if I was on the QA team with Olga, it would be nice to see when Olga resolves a ticket. To do this, we could automate a message to our group chat on resolve of tickets. In this case, for instance, we would get a chat message stating, \u201cOlga resolved ticket 111.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, ChatOps is useful for an issue we often have with managing tickets whereby side conversations that happen over other mediums like email and chat are not chronicled into the ticket summary or comments. ChatOps can solve this problem by automatically adding comments to tickets when tagging is used. So I could be in a chat and say, \u201cHey Olga, I noticed you changed the default end date for ticket #111. Do you think this could be a problem on the last day of the month?\u201d She could respond saying, \u201cI already thought of that corner case.\u201d With ChatOps we could have this conversation automatically added to ticket 111.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scenarios I described above are just scratching the surface of how ChatOps can be used to automate things in a team setting. Other popular things we have seen folks do are notifications related to the CI\/CD process; for example, \u201cJoel, your commit ZYZ broke unit tests 1,2,3 and the build has failed, please fix as soon as possible.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atlassian has written an article on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlassian.com\/blog\/software-teams\/what-is-chatops-adoption-guide\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">levels of ChatOps<\/a> teams can use.
